Why Learn the Chinese Language and Culture?

Speaking some Chinese will make a great first impression and open the doors for you. But to build trust and make Chinese friends, some understanding of the culture goes a long way.

We believe that one can't go very far with a foreign language without the underlying knowledge of its culture. One also can't really appreciate the refinement of a culture without some knowledge of its language.

For children to learn and actually use a foreign language, they must be exposed to its culture as early and as often as possible. The knowledge of the culture is not only a sustainable motivator but also a valuable tool that gives meanings and usages to the language. Learning the language alone, one may end up talking like a tourist and frequently will stop learning it once the novelty wears out.

About Baby China - A valuable lesson learned from Children

I started out with the intention to make a video to "teach" my English-speaking kids Chinese language and culture. Children are the most honest and insightful audience. By turning on and off their attentions during the viewing of many versions of the video, they guided me to what it is today - a non-instructional fun video to "expose" children from families with some or no Chinese background to Chinese language and culture.

My kids have taught me a lesson I shall treasure forever: don't ever underestimate your child's brain power and learning abilities. Frequently, children learn the best when they are not "taught" but "exposed" to a new thing. What is the difference? To teach is to assume you know what is the best for the child. By doing this, you never bother to first enter a child's world, learn from him, and build the trust. You just eagerly impose the new thing on the child. But a child doesn't lie. If what you do bores him, he just simply turns off his attention. After many versions of the video, I finally understood what my kids were trying to tell me: if you want me to be interested in learning a new thing, come to my world first before you take me to a new world.

For children born and raised in Western culture, Baby China uses the familiar and comforting toys and visuals as a bridge leading to the unfamiliar music of Chinese language and visuals of Chinese culture. For adopted Chinese children, the bridge comes from the other side: from the comforting and familiar Chinese sounds and visuals to a brand new world of Western visuals.

Just because our children stand 1 or 3 feet tall, it is wrong for us to assume we know better. If something is hard for us, it is wrong to assume our kids can't get it. A child has 300 times more neurons than adults. His ears are open and his vocal muscles are flexible. He hears a foreign language accurately just like he hears a song. He doesn't need analysis or explanation of what he hears. He just listens and he knows. The best thing grown ups can do is to provide our children with as much and as earlier exposures to different things as possible.
