At the core of Chinese Culture
6 Important Experiences of Life
5 Basic Human Relationships
Chinese culture is deeply rooted within the six basic human experiences: Clothing, Eating, Living, Traveling, Nurturing the Body, and Cultivating the Personality. Among these six experience, eating and clothing are at the top. Chinese have a saying, “A person’s life on earth can be summarized with two words: eating and clothing.” This really shows how the Chinese people value the pleasurable experience of eating well and dressing nicely. Many Chinese may tell you that the Chinese culture is also a culture of eating. “Have you eaten?” is one of the most frequently used greetings among people you know. One of Confucius's contributions to the Chinese culture is to define the reciprocal five human relationships as the foundation of a stable society. In each of the relationship, there is a Yin and a Yang, the dominant and the subordinate. Each party in a relationship has his role and obligations. But the Yin and the Yang can switch when the dominant party is not up to the task. Three out of the five relationships are family related. Family is the back bone of the Chinese culture. Ancestor worshiping and continuing the family line by a son are the two most important things for many Chinese families. It is so critical to have a son to ensure the on-going ancestor worshiping that today many Chinese families will risk anything to have a son.
